Marinara Sauce
Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat and add the olive oil.
Sauté the diced onions for 3–5 minutes until softened, then add the minced garlic and dried basil. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, stir to combine, and bring to a simmer.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally while you make the meatballs. (If the sauce begins to spurt, reduce the heat to low).
Homemade Meatballs
Soak the bread in milk in a large bowl, then add the egg and mix together.
Stir in the garlic, onion flakes, dried herbs, salt, and pepper.
Add the ground beef and pork, mixing gently by hand until just combined.
Use a cookie scoop or your hands to portion out the meat into 1 1/2 oz balls.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil to coat the bottom.
Cook the meatballs for about 2 minutes on all sides until evenly browned.
Stir the salt and sugar into the marinara sauce and taste for seasoning. Adjust as needed, then pour the sauce over the browned meatballs in the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let them simmer while preparing the pasta.
Pasta
Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water, according to package instructions, until al dente. Reserve ½ cup of pasta water before draining.
Add the reserved pasta water to the skillet with the meatballs and sauce. Toss gently to combine. Serve the hot pasta on a platter with the meatballs and sauce on top.
